The RG is one of only a few RG models produced with a fret neck. It has the rounded-edged body style which distinguishes it from the more sharp-edged modern RG body. The RG features a basswood body bolted to a maple neck with a fret rosewood fingerboard with dot position markers. Components include pickguard-mounted Ibanez pickups with a humbucker at the bridge and single-coils at the neck and middle positions and a Powerocker tremolo bridge. The RG has the original swoopy, Roadstar headstock shape and the headstock is painted to match the body. This version was made in Japan, presumably by FujiGen.

The story of Ibanez is one of rapid dominance and near constant reinvention. However, the Ibanez story starts much earlier, in , with a company called Hoshino Gakki, a sheet music and music-products distributor in Nagoya, Japan. The company switched to making guitars in the s, adopting the name of the well-respected maker. These early low-quality entry-level guitars looked odd and were typical of those found in department stores and catalogs.
The Ibanez RG is a series of electric guitars produced by Hoshino Gakki and one of the best-selling superstrat -style guitars ever made. The first model in the series, the RG, was originally released in and advertised as part of the Roadstar series. That series was renamed "RG" in and all models since are simply known as RGs. It rose in popularity throughout the s and had the features that musicians in the rising shred and thrash metal movements of that time were looking for: a fast neck, comfortable body, powerful pickups, and a reliable tremolo system. The RG series has the most subtypes of any Ibanez model and is the most popular series of Ibanez electric guitars produced by Hoshino Gakki.
